I want to share my feelings on what I’ve been reading today. I assume that this is a wake-up call for Africa to become more self-dependent through the COVID-19 pandemic of intracontinental trade, which makes it more resilient in the face of global downturns. A job buffer keeping hunger at bay will be created by strong intra-African trade, with a lower percentage of people affected by COVID-19 than the West.
As I see it, redirecting grants into building a larger manufacturing sector is a crucial long-term step needed to shield future generations of Africans from whatever disruption could come their way. The crisis that finally fulfils the promise of the African Continental Free Trade Zone may be, indeed should be, the coronavirus.
